Storing silver
Silver tarnishes when its surface reacts with sulfur-containing compounds in the air, forming a dark layer of silver sulfide. While pure silver is less reactive, most jewelry is made of sterling silver, which contains copper to improve durability. Copper oxidizes quickly when exposed to sulfur and moisture.
Direct sunlight can cause and accelerate the tarnishing of silver. While light alone isn't the primary culprit, the sun's UV rays and the heat it generates speed up chemical reactions between silver and sulfur compounds in the air.
